Counting-On

The object of the game is for each player to correctly count the number of counters collected. The player with the most points after five rounds of the game wins. This is a game for two players.

Materials

  • Cubes or counters
  • Large plastic cup
  • Counting-On Spinners from the Student Activity Book
  • Clear plastic spinner or a paper clip and a pencil

Directions

  1. Place a plastic spinner over the Counting-On Spinners or use a pencil and paper clip to create a spinner.
  2. Player 1 spins the first spinner
    (1–10).
  3. Player 2 puts the number of counters shown on the spinner into the cup and says the number aloud.
  4. Player 1 spins the second spinner (1–6).
  5. Player 2 sets that number of counters next to the cup and again says the number aloud.
  6. Player 1 uses the Counting-On strategy aloud to find the total number of counters inside and next to the cup.
  7. Player 2 checks the total by counting all the counters in the cup and beside the cup.
  8. If Player 1 has given the correct total, a point is scored.
  9. The two players switch roles and now it is Player 2’s turn to spin the spinners, determine the total number of counters, and possibly score a point.
  10. Each player spins two times before it is the other person’s turn.
  11. Whoever has the most points after five rounds of the game wins.

Variation

Instead of receiving 1 point after each turn, players could receive the total number of counters they counted correctly for each turn. Players can use paper and pencil or a calculator to total their points after five rounds. Whoever has the most points after five rounds wins the game.
