Make 99
This is a game for two players. The object of the game is to be the first player to play a card that makes a sum of 99 or over.
Materials
- 4 sets of Digit Cards 0–9
- Make 99 Game Board from the Student Activity Book
- Make 99 Recording Sheet from the Student Activity Book
Directions
- Each player gets 5 cards. The extra cards are placed face down on the Draw Pile. The top card is turned face up on the Add Pile.
- Player 1 chooses 1 card to place face up in the Add Pile. Player 1 adds the number on the card to the total that was there before placing the card.
- Player 1 says the number sentence that describes the move and writes it on the Make 99 Recording Sheet. For example: If the card in the Add Pile is 8 and 9 is placed on top, the number sentence is 8 + 9 = 17.
- Player 1 takes another card from the Draw Pile so he or she has 5 cards again.
- Player 2 repeats the steps. For example: If the last total was 17 and Player 2 places a 5, the number sentence is 17 + 5 = 22.
- Players keep taking turns until someone reaches the sum of 99.
- The first player to play a card that reaches 99 or more is the winner.
