“You might know the answers to most of the fact problems, but you might not know the answers to problems with larger numbers,” said Mrs. Dewey. “Let's try some problems with factors larger than 10, like 5 14. I think the break-apart method can help you with those problems.”

= 50 + 20
= 70

Mark found 5 14 by breaking the 14 into two equal parts.

5 14 = 5 7 + 5 7
= 35 + 35
= 70
