Demonstrate the activity by having you lead and the class follow. After students understand the activity, ask students to work with a partner to continue to practice making twenty. Remind students to show numbers greater than 10 by showing all ten fingers then closing both hands and quickly showing a number between 0 and 10.

U. Making Twenty

Stand up and find a partner.

  1. Face your partner.
  2. Player 1 puts his or her arms straight up in the air.
  3. Once in the air, Player 1 uses his or her fingers to show a number between 0 and 20. To show a number greater than ten, show all ten fingers then close both hands and quickly show a number between 0 and 10.
  4. Player 2 puts his or her arms down and displays the number needed to make 20. For example, Player 1 shows 14 fingers and Player 2 shows 6 fingers because 14 + 6 = 20. Another example is, Player 1 shows ten fingers then quickly shows 3 fingers and Player 2 shows 7 fingers because 13 + 7 = 20.
  5. On the next turn, Player 2 leads.
