TIMS Task

  1. Possible response: If Nisha knows that 2 × 8 = 16, she can find 3 × 8 by adding 16 + 8 = 24.
  2. Possible response: Sam can think about nickels. It takes five nickels to make a quarter, or 25 cents. Two more nickels are 10 cents. 25¢ + 10¢ = 35¢, so 5 × 7 = 35.
  3. Possible response: you can break 6 × 2 apart so it is 6 × 2 = 3 × 2 + 3 × 2. Since 3 × 2 = 6, the answer will be 6 + 6 or 12.
  4. Possible response: Julia can think about dimes. She knows that 10 dimes equals $1.00, so 10 × 10 = 100.
