• Measure to the nearest centimeter.
  • Make a data table like the one shown.

Even out the strips to find the mean:
  • Tape the four strips together end-to-end to make one long strip. Be careful not to let the strips overlap.
  • Fold the long strip into four equal parts. (Fold the strip in half, then in half again.)

  • Measure the length of one-fourth of the long strip to the nearest centimeter. This length is the mean.
  • Write the mean for your group at the bottom of your data table.

When the students in Group 1 finished “evening out” the length of their strips, they found that one-fourth of the long strip measured 53 cm. This is the mean length of their strips. They reported to the class that, on average, the circumference of their heads is 53 cm.
