LESSON 5 Subtract Mixed Numbers

Mr. Moreno's class is solving this word problem:

It is 2 miles to Ruby Falls from John's tent. He has already hiked 1 miles. How much farther does he need to hike?

Josh writes the number sentence 2 − 1 to describe the problem. Then he solves it using fraction circle pieces. He trades 2 red wholes and 1 pink half for all blue pieces and subtracts.

Maya thinks a ruler is like a number line. “ I start at the 2-inch mark and jump back 1 inch. I jump back inch more and land on the 1-inch mark.”

Keenya uses mental math.
