LESSON 7 Stencilrama

The children in Mr. Martin's class decorated the room with geometric designs from cultures around the world. Students made borders to decorate different places in the room by repeating designs over and over again.
To be able to repeat the same design exactly, students made stencils. Here is the way Liz and Diana made their stencil.
  • They looked through a book of African designs and found a design they liked on a piece of cloth from Nigeria.
  • Liz and Diana drew the design on a card.
  • They cut the design out of the card and used the card as their stencil.
  • The girls took turns coloring the design on the border.
  • Liz placed the stencil at the edge of a long piece of paper and used markers to color in the cut-out space. She made a mark at the edge of the stencil so Diana would know where to place the stencil on her turn.
  • Diana took her turn coloring the design. She decided to make the design more interesting by turning the card upside down. She was careful to place the short side of the stencil across the top of the border, just as Liz did.
