LESSON 3 Number Sentences
Tanya and Jacob drew these number lines to show how a base-ten hopper can move from 0 to 1032. They each wrote number sentences to match their number lines.
Tanya said, “If our moves are both equal to 1032, then they must be equal to each other.” She wrote:
1000 + 30 + 2 = 1000 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 2
Tanya's number sentence is a true number sentence because the amount on one side of the equal sign has the same value as the amount on the other side. Both sides equal 1032.
Tanya's number sentence is a true number sentence because the amount on one side of the equal sign has the same value as the amount on the other side. Both sides equal 1032.
A true number sentence can also be called an equation because the
amounts on both sides are equal.
