Slides, Flips, and Turns in Escher Drawings

M.C. Escher was a Dutch artist who used many mathematical ideas to create his works. Escher was born in 1898 and died in 1972. Escher often began with a tessellating shape, such as a square or a hexagon. He changed these shapes so that they looked like other objects, such as animals. The changes were made so that the final shape also tessellated. Escher then used slides and turns, along with interesting details on the shapes, to create his art.

This picture at the right is called Symmetry Drawing with Pegasus.

M.C. Escher used slides of the winged horse to make this drawing.

The picture at the left is another Escher drawing called Symmetry Drawing with Fish.
