- Problem Solver:
- We can't read your mind. Only you know which one you pictured in your head. I think those terms are used for writing numbers, not for talking.
- Not Sure:
- Thinking about reading the three digits in each period makes it easy to write the expanded form. 3000 + 600 + 50 + 7. Each period has a hundred, a ten, and a one place in it and it is named by its place value. Let's try reading some more numbers. The population of our county is nine hundred forty-six thousand, three hundred sixty-two. The population of our state is six million, five hundred fifty-three thousand, two hundred fifty-five.
- Remembers Rules:
- One more thing. We usually place commas between the numbers in each period to help keep track of the periods. In some countries they use spaces instead of commas. The population of the world is usually written 7,017,543,964 in the United States, and it is written 7 017 543 964 in some other countries.
- Problem Solver:
- Now let's get back to the world population and try to apply each of the words . . .
- Teacher:
- Time's up! You can finish the review at home and we'll discuss any of your questions tomorrow.
- Not Sure:
- I guess our group will be taking the world population home with us tonight!
