LESSON 3 Estimate Products

The students in Mr. Moreno's class wondered how mathematicians count large populations.
Mr. Moreno explained, “Sometimes scientists use a benchmark and then multiply. For example, if there are 30 students in our classroom, we could use 30 as a benchmark for about how many students are in all the other classrooms in our school. Some classes have more than 30 and some have less than 30. The benchmark estimate is reasonable but not exact.”

Mr. Moreno explained, “How could you use this benchmark to estimate how many students are in our school? ”
