LESSON 1 Eyelets Lab
Flats and Gym Shoes
“I'm not sure those flats will be appropriate for school, Blanca,” Mrs. Campos said. “Why don't you wear your gym shoes? I think they would be more comfortable.”
“I hate those gym shoes, Mama,” answered Blanca. “They are too hot. Anyway, I like these.”
“But those flats…what if you have gym and you have to run?” Mrs. Campos responded.
“Trust me, Mom,” said Blanca, “these shoes are fine.”
Later, at school, Blanca met her friend Irma. “¡Hola, Irma! Guess what? My mom wanted me to wear gym shoes for the first day of school. She said I wouldn't be able to run in flats.”
“Oh, no!” said Irma. “How did you convince her to let you wear them?”
“I told her to trust me, and she did, for today,” said Blanca. “But how can I convince her that everyone wears flats everywhere now?”
“I don't know. You could bring your mom here and just have her look around – there aren't too many gym shoes in sight.”
“That's it! I'll do a survey of the shoes everybody's wearing and show her that lots of kids wear flats to school,” said Blanca.
“Just like those surveys we did last year,” said Irma. “Can I help?”
“Sure. Let's get started.”
