Mr. Moreno:
What else should we write here to answer the question, “How much do we like animals?”
Keenya:
How about, “With a median of 2 pets each?”
Jacob:
And that the mode was 2 pets, too.
Mr. Moreno:
Good. How well does this answer the big question? Was Number of Pets a good variable to use to answer the question about how much we like animals?
Maya:
Not really. I like animals a lot, but we're not allowed to have any pets in the apartment where I live, so I wrote, “Zero.”
Luis:
And we have two dogs so my number was two, but they're my brother's and I don't really like them that much.
Mr. Moreno:
And what about you, Jacob? You have six pets. Does that mean you like animals?
Jacob:
Yeah. I want to get another garter snake, too.
Mr. Moreno:
So this variable tells us something about how much we like animals, but not everything. What other variables might we want to study if we had time?
Jacob:
We could count the animal books we each have. I have a lot, but if you don't like animals, you probably wouldn't have them unless somebody gave them to you.
Teacher:
That's right. So that might be another good variable to study. Any others?
Maya:
How many animal shows you watch on TV.
