LESSON 8 Add and Subtract Decimals with Paper and Pencil

Adding Decimals

Mr. Moreno's class is learning about decimals at the grocery store. Most food and cleaning products give the weight or volume of the contents in both standard and metric units. Roberto and Jessie are shopping for juice to make punch.

“Let's use the grid to help us add the liters,” said Jessie.

“Using the hundredths grid, I see that we need 0.75 of a liter of juice for our recipe,” said Roberto.

“Now let's try adding the liters using just paper and pencil,” said Jessie. “Mr. Moreno told us that it's very important to line up the numbers by their place value when adding decimals.”

“I wrote 0.5 liters as 0.50 liters to make it easier to add,” said Jessie.
