Grace's Column Method for Division

I can solve the problem by drawing one column for each cup and “filling” them up with numbers. I'll start by putting 100 rocks into each cup. Now I have 164 rocks left in the bag, since 664 − 500 = 164.

I'll put 10 more rocks in each cup to use 50 more rocks. That leaves 114 rocks still to divide, since 164 − 50 = 114.

I'll put 20 more rocks in each cup.
That adds up to 100.
114 − 100 = 14, so there are still 14 rocks in the bag to divide.

Now I will put 2 more rocks in each cup. That adds up to 10.
14 − 10 = 4, so there are 4 rocks still in the bag.

Each person gets 100 + 10 + 20 + 2 = 132 rocks,
with 4 left over.
