LESSON 3 Paper-and-Pencil Division

Mr. Haddad of the TIMS Candy Company made 396 Chocos. The company sold them in packages of 6. How many packages of Chocos did they make?

“I can solve that with division,” said Lee Yah. “They made 396 ÷ 6 packages.”

Lee Yah said she knows a paper-and-pencil method for doing division. She called this the partial quotients method.

Lee Yah wrote the problem like this:

“I make an estimate about the number of packages I think they made. My first estimate is 20.”

“This time I'll choose a larger number: 40.”
