The 5th-grade debate team is selling Crunchy Nuts to raise money to travel to Washington, D.C. The company sent the team 5386 Crunchy Nut snack bags to sell. Mr. Moreno gave each of the 8 debate team members the same number of snack bags to sell. How many did each person get?
Romesh wrote the problem like this:
“I make an estimate about the number of snack bags I think each person will get. My first guess is 300. I write:
“Since 8 300 = 2400, this means I have taken care of 2400 of the snack bags. I still have 2986 left to distribute. The 300 means each person has already gotten 300 snack bags. Now I guess at how many more snack bags I can give each person. I'll use 300 again since 2400 will take care of a lot of the 2986 remaining. Now I have 586 left.”
“I can't use 300 again because it is way too big. I'll try 20. Since 20 8 = 160, I have 426 left. I'll try something bigger next.”
