Make a sketch on the board to illustrate the problem. Students will need access to number lines and 200 Charts.

  1. 12 cc. Possible strategy: counting up from 80, 90, 91, 92 on a number line or graduated cylinder.

  2. 104 cc; student explanations will vary. The volume of 2 more pencils is 12 cc + 12 cc = 24 cc. The water level would rise to 104 cc by adding two more pencils.

T. Measuring Volume

  1. Jessie found the volume of two new pencils. She filled the graduated cylinder to 80 cc. After she placed the pencils in the cylinder, the water rose to 92 cc. What is the volume of the two pencils? Show or tell how you solved the problem.

  2. If Jessie placed two more new pencils in the cylinder, how high would you expect the water to rise?
Show or tell how you know.
