Lesson 2

Hundreds, Tens, and Ones

Est. Class Sessions: 2

Summarizing the Lesson

Ask students to share what they have noticed about base-ten pieces.

  • How are the base-ten pieces related to each other? (It takes 10 pieces to make the next biggest piece. For example, 10 skinnies make 1 flat.)
  • How are the base-ten pieces related to the numbers?

The following ideas may emerge:

  1. When you represent a number using the fewest pieces possible, the number of pieces match the digits in the number. For example, 1 flat, 2 skinnies, and 3 bits represent the number 123 with the fewest pieces.
  2. The partition you get from the digits of the number is the fewest pieces partition. For example, the partition given by 1 flat, 2 skinnies, and 3 bits uses the fewest pieces.

These concepts will be explored further in the next lesson.
