Base-Ten Hops. Have students complete Questions 1–10 on the Helping Professor Peabody pages in the Student Activity Book.
As students work on the questions, ask them to explain their thinking using discussion prompts similar to the following:
- How are your two number lines alike? How are they different?
- How many hops of ten did you make for each number line? How many hops of one?
- Did you move backward on any hops? Why or why not?
- Which way is the most efficient or easiest to think about in your head? Why?
Use Helping Professor Peabody Check-In: Questions 7–10 in the Student Activity Book to assess each student's ability to represent large numbers using a number line and number sentences. Note students' abilities to compose and decompose numbers using ones, tens, and hundreds [E2] and to show different partitions of numbers using number lines and number sentences [E3].
Lesson 6 Workshop: Place Value provides targeted practice.
