UNIT PREPARATION

Display the Math Practices page where all students can see it.

Display a class number line (0–130) where all students can see and reach it with a pointer.

Attach a number line (0–100) on each student's desk for use throughout the year.

Students will need 6–8 copies of the Base-Ten Recording Sheets 1 Master from Lesson 2 during this unit.

Find a place to display a large monthly calendar for students to see and write on. As a daily routine, students record their thinking on this calendar as they explore patterns in factors and multiples. See Unit 3 Lesson 5.

Have the following tools readily available for the DPPs in this unit:

  • base-ten pieces
  • number lines
  • connecting cubes
  • a collection of coins
  • 200 Chart (Student Guide) Reference
  • Subtraction Facts I Know charts (from Unit 2 or Master in Lesson 2)
  • Subtraction Flash Cards: Groups 5 and 6 (stored in an envelope)

LESSON SESSIONS DESCRIPTION SUPPLIES

LESSON 1

Tens and Ones

1 Students explore different ways to partition two-digit numbers into tens and ones, representing the numbers with connecting cubes to develop place value concepts and number sense.
  • connecting cubes

LESSON 2

Hundreds, Tens, and Ones

2 Students use base-ten pieces to represent three-digit numbers. They play a game to reinforce the concept that 10 base-ten pieces have the same value as the next larger piece. They explore different ways to partition numbers into ones, tens, and hundreds and look for the partition that uses the fewest pieces.
  • base-ten pieces
  • spinners

LESSON 3

Thousands, Hundreds, Tens, and Ones

1–2 This lesson extends the work of Lessons 1 and 2 to four-digit numbers. By working with a full set of base-ten pieces—representing ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands—students reinforce and extend place value concepts necessary for developing efficient procedures for computation.
  • base-ten pieces

LESSON 4

Comparing and Writing Numbers

1–2 Students play a game that provides a context for reading and comparing numbers. Students then complete number sentences using symbols for greater than and less than and write numbers in words.
  • spinners
  • scrap paper

LESSON 5

Base-Ten Hoppers

2–3 Students develop flexibility composing and decomposing numbers. They use moves of ones, tens, and hundreds on number lines to develop mental math skills.

LESSON 6

Workshop: Place Value

2–3 This Workshop gives students an opportunity to improve their flexibility and confidence with different representations and partitions of a number. Students revisit trading, compare different representations of numbers to solve problems, represent the partitions of a number using a number sentence, and practice reading and writing large numbers.
  • base-ten pieces
  • spinners

LESSON 7

Number Sense with Dollars and Cents

1 Students work with a list of items and their prices. They estimate which items they can buy for a given amount of money.
  • desk number lines
