Lesson 6

Workshop: Place Value

Est. Class Sessions: 2–3

Summarizing the Lesson

Select a few problems from the Workshop to discuss as a class. You might choose these problems to represent common areas of difficulty for students, or areas where students made significant progress over the course of the lesson. Ask a few students to share their problems and solutions with the class.

  • How did [student name] solve the problem?
  • Did someone use a different strategy or method?
  • How are these strategies different?
  • Which strategy did you like better? Why?

Distribute and assign the Place Value Assessment Master.

Use the Place Value Assessment Master with Feedback Box to assess students' abilities to meet the following Expectations:

  • Compose and decompose numbers using ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands [E2].
  • Show different partitions of numbers using base-ten pieces, number lines, and number sentences [E3].
  • Recognize that different partitions of a number have the same total (e.g., 100 + 20 + 3 = 100 + 10 + 13) [E4].
  • Read and write large numbers to the thousands [E5].
  • Compare large numbers to the thousands [E6].
