Lesson 7

Number Sense with Dollars and Cents

Est. Class Sessions: 1

Summarizing the Lesson

Share Solution Strategies. Upon completion of the problems, ask students to share their strategies and solutions to Questions 5–11. Focus this discussion using a display of the Math Practices page in the Student Guide Reference section. Remind students of the need to clearly show the Math Practices in their written work.

  • How did you solve Question 5? (Possible responses: I used doubling. Sam can buy four plums. If he doubles 24 cents, that is 48 cents–less than 50 cents. So if he doubles it again, the price will still be less than one dollar.)
  • How did you solve Question 6? (Possible responses: I used a benchmark of 50 cents. Since a pear costs almost 50 cents and a bunch of grapes costs a good bit more than 50 cents, Sam will not be able to buy both for one dollar.)
  • What tools did you use [MPE2]? (Possible responses: I used a number line or table to keep track of the total spent, drew a picture, or used money.)
  • What strategies did you use [MPE2]? (Possible responses: I used benchmark numbers like 25 or 50 to estimate how much is spent, or used doubling.)
  • How did you show or tell how you arrived at your answer [MPE5]? (Possible responses: I drew a picture to show what was purchased, wrote number sentences using benchmark numbers, or wrote sentences to tell what I did for each step of the problem.)
  • What labels did you use in this problem [MPE6]? (Possible responses: I included the name of each thing purchased and the amount of each item purchased, e.g., 2 pears or 3 bananas.)

Use this discussion to prepare students for Check-In: Question 12 in the Student Guide. Assign this question to individual students.

Peer Assessment. After students have completed Check-In: Question 12, ask them to review a partner's work using the Student-to-Student section of the Number Sense with Dollars and Cents Check-In: Question 12 Feedback Box Assessment Master. After receiving feedback, ask students to revise their work based on the peer review using a different color pen.

Check-In: Question 12 from the Student Guide and the corresponding Feedback Box can be used to assess a student's ability to find a strategy [MPE2], show his or her work [MPE5], and use labels [MPE6].
