Lesson 1

All Sorts of Buttons

Est. Class Sessions: 2

Extension

Because buttons can be sorted by many characteristics, you can use them to assess students’ understanding of mathematical patterns. For example, draw a pattern of two buttons with four holes, one button with two holes, and two buttons with four holes. Ask students to predict which button comes next in the pattern. (One button with two holes.) Then have students draw their own patterns on a sheet of paper and challenge their peers to predict which button comes next.
