Students do a systematic review of the subtraction facts in third grade. In this lesson, students are introduced to strategies and tools used to practice and track their progress. The subtraction facts are organized by strategy into eight groups of nine facts each. This lesson involves the first two groups of facts that can be solved with the strategies using tens and thinking addition.

Materials Preparation

Subtraction Flash Cards. Copy the Subtraction Flash Cards: Groups 1 and 2 double-sided on heavier paper. Ask students to cut them apart so that each student has eighteen flash cards.

Prepare Chart Storage. Prepare a central location in the classroom to store students' Subtraction Facts I Know charts so both you and students can revisit them throughout the year.
