Mathematical Standards

3.OA.D
Solve problems involving the four operations, and identify and explain patterns in arithmetic. (3.OA.D.9)

Standards for Mathematical Practice

MP2.
Reason quantitatively.
MP3.
Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
MP5.
Use appropriate tools strategically.
MP6.
Attend to precision.
MP8.
Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

This lesson is similar to Spinning Sums. Students spin two matching spinners to generate random subtraction sentences and work in groups to look for patterns in differences.

Content in this Lesson

  • Using strategies and choosing tools to collect, organize, and graph data [MPE2].
  • Using patterns in data to make predictions [E1].
  • Identifying patterns in differences [E3].
  • Communicating solutions verbally and in writing [MPE5].
