Lesson 3

Close Enough!

Est. Class Sessions: 3

Summarizing the Lesson

Give students the following problem and ask them to find a reasonable estimate and to prepare a brief explanation of their strategies. Ask students to share their thinking, encouraging the class to ask clarifying questions.

Laura is at the store and wants to buy milk for $2.05 a gallon, yogurt for $0.75, and a box of breakfast cereal for $3.85. About how much money will Laura need?

You may suggest that children estimate to the nearest dollar but emphasize that we often round up when at the grocery store so that we do not find ourselves without enough money at the checkout counter. Discuss the estimates children present. Some possible estimates are $2.00 + $1.00 + $4.00 = $7.00 or $2.00 + $0.75 + $4.00 = $6.75.

Assign the Places Please Assessment Master to students to complete independently.

Use the Places Please Assessment Master to assess students' abilities to make connections among representations of numbers to the thousands using base-ten pieces, expanded form, and standard form [E1] and to estimate sums using mental strategies including rounding using benchmarks and finding convenient numbers [E5].

Use the Workshop in Lesson 6 to provide targeted practice with place value representations [E1].
