3.NBT.A
Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic. (3.NBT.A.2)

Standards for Mathematical Practice

MP1.
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
MP2.
Reason quantitatively.
MP3.
Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
MP4.
Model with mathematics.
MP5.

MP7.
Look for and make use of structure.

The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins by Dr. Seuss provides a context for the continued development of students' own addition strategies with multidigit numbers. Students partition, add, and subtract two- and three-digit numbers using mental math strategies. They use number lines and expanded form to help visualize the partitions and operations.

Content in this Lesson

  • Showing that different partitions of the same number are equal using base-ten pieces and number lines [E1].
  • Representing and solving addition problems using number lines [E2].
  • Adding and subtracting multidigit numbers using mental math strategies or paper-and-pencil methods [E3, E4].
  • Choosing appropriate addition strategies.
