Students might count the number of pencils in several different desks and estimate an average number of pencils per desk. Then they might use a calculator to multiply or use repeated addition to find an answer for all the desks in the class. Since many strategies are possible, the class can compare and contrast different methods. Emphasize the fact that an exact answer is not needed.
