TIMS Challenge

Answers will vary. The total amount of money is $1000. As students write their number sentences, check to see that they are writing them correctly. Since 400 + 500 does not equal 1000, discourage students from writing number sentences like the following:

400 + 500 = 900 + 100 = 1000

Instead encourage them to write:

400 + 500 + 100 = 1000.

Make sure base-ten pieces and other tools are available for students as they work to solve the problems.

L. $1000 to Share

Suppose you had nine $100 bills and two $50 bills.

  1. How could you divide the money into two shares? Write a number sentence for each way. (The shares do not have to be equal.)
  2. How could you divide the money into three shares? Write a number sentence for each way. The shares do not have to be equal.
