Lesson 6

Workshop: Represent Large Numbers

Est. Class Sessions: 1–2

Summarizing the Lesson

Display the National Parks Master.

  • How many people visited the National Parks in California in 2012? (35,991,200 people)
  • Which state had the fewest number of visitors to its National Parks? (New Mexico)
  • What is the number of visitors to Arizona National Parks rounded to the nearest million? (10,000,000)

Ask students to work with a partner to choose one of the states on the chart and represent the number of visitors to the National Parks in that state using two different number sentences. Provide an opportunity for students to share their number sentences, as time permits. Record suggested number sentences on the display. See Figure 3 for possible solutions on a completed chart.
