Lesson 5

Stack Up

Est. Class Sessions: 2

Summarizing the Lesson

Prepare students for a peer review of their work. Ask students to exchange work with another pair of students. Once exchanged, the reviewers should record their names on the Stack Up Work Check-In: Question 3 Feedback Box Student-to-Student. Students then use the Feedback Box to provide feedback to their classmate. Encourage students to talk about their observations and questions and to write specific observations and questions in the appropriate box for each Expectation.

Ask a few students to share interesting solution strategies.

  • How did you get that number?
  • Does the number of pennies in a meter seem reasonable? How can you check?
  • How did you decide you were going to multiply (or use any other operation)?
  • When you multiplied, what were you trying to do?
  • How can you check to see if your answer is reasonable? (Solve the problem using another strategy and then compare answers.)
  • Tell me in words the number of pennies in a stack that would reach the moon.

After students have had an opportunity to review and discuss their work with a peer, provide time for them to revise their work based on the input they received. When students have revised their work, they will hand it in with the feedback box for teacher-to-student feedback.

Use Check-In: Q# 3 on the Stack Up Work Assessment Master with the Feedback Box to assess students' abilities to find a strategy [MPE2]; check for reasonableness [MPE3]; show work [MPE5] and use labels [MPE6].
