UNIT PREPARATION

Display the class number line (0–130) where students can see and reach it with a pointer.

Attach a desk number line (0–40) to each student’s desk to use throughout the year.

Display the Math Practices page where all students can see it.

Attach copies of the Desk-Size 100 Chart to students' desks or folders to use throughout the year in class and at home. See the Unit 9 Lesson 7 Materials Preparation.

Copy the Ten Frames and Number Line Master and the 100 Chart Master back-to-back for easy access to these tools during class and at home. See the Unit 12 Lesson 1 Materials Preparation.

Display the Comparison Symbol Chart from Unit 8 Lesson 5.

Gather a variety of examples of cubes (e.g., sugar cubes, blocks, boxes). See Lesson 1 Materials Preparation.

Gather a digital clock.

Have the following tools readily available for the Daily Practice and Problems items in this unit:

LESSON SESSIONS DESCRIPTION SUPPLIES

LESSON 1

Volume of Cube Models

2–3 Students are introduced to the concept of volume and learn to determine volume by counting connecting cubes. They use connecting cubes to construct different buildings that have a volume of eight cubic units and use number sentences to describe each building.
  • cubes
  • connecting cubes
  • large sheets of paper
  • chart paper

LESSON 2

Estimate Volume with Cube Models

1–2 Student pairs use connecting cubes to build models of classroom objects then estimate the volume of the objects by finding the number of cubes in their models. They compare the volume of the models to determine if their estimates are reasonable.
  • connecting cubes
  • classroom objects

LESSON 3

Strategies to Find Volume

2 Students work with a partner to build cube models based on three-dimensional drawings. Students explore strategies, including skip counting and repeated addition, for finding the volume of cube models.
  • connecting cubes
  • calculators
  • chart paper

LESSON 4

Use Repeated Addition

2–3 Students find the volume of cube structures by skip counting and writing number sentences showing repeated addition. They build cube models from 3-dimensional drawings and compare them. In the Adventure Book, Manuel has exciting adventures in a dream where animals are changed into cube creatures.
  • connecting cubes
  • calculators

LESSON 5

The Digital Clock

2 Students are introduced to reading time to the nearest hour and half hour on a digital clock. They match the time shown on an analog clock to the time on a digital clock.
  • Telling Time by Jules Older
  • digital and analog clocks
  • game markers
