Ask students to remove the Snakes pages from the
Student Activity Book. Tell students that Kim went to
the zoo and learned about snakes. She wants to compare
their lengths. Direct students' attention to
Question 1 and ask them to draw lines to show the
length of each snake.
Refer to the Measurement
Advice chart and ask:
- Which advice will help you draw a line that is [2 inches] long? (Possible response: Start counting
units from the point; keep the units straight)
- Is there any additional advice needed? (Possible
response: Count the unit twice, draw once.)
Assign Questions 1–3. When most students have
completed Questions 1–3, display the Snakes page
and discuss Question 4.
Refer to the Measurement
Advice chart and ask:
- What advice could help Kim and Sam in Question 4A? (Count the units, not the numbers on the
ruler.)
- What advice could help Kim and Sam in Question 4B? (Count the units, not the numbers on the
ruler)
- What advice could help Kim and Sam in Question 4C? (Put rulers together to measure lengths
longer than the tool.)
- Is there any advice that you need to add or change
on the chart?
Have students complete Question 4.
Assign the Measure with a Ruler Homework Master.
As part of that homework assignment, students are
asked to find objects that measure 1 inch and 1 centimeter.
Show students the 1-inch and 1-centimeter
marks you have drawn on chart paper for display. As
a follow-up to the homework assignment, ask students
to share their examples of centimeter and inch
lengths with a partner. Choose a few to list or attach
to the "How Long" display. Students will expand
this display to larger units in Lesson 3.
