Developing the Lesson

Part 2: Measure Palm Variation for Central School

Ask students to remove the Palm Variation: Central School pages from the Student Activity Book. Tell students that Mrs. Cook's class collected palm data, but collected data from teachers and students in different grades. Ask students to work on Question 1 independently. Check students' line plots as they work making sure the line plot accurately represents the data in the table.

After students have a completed line plot, ask them to work with a partner to answer Questions 2–4.

  • What information did you need to solve this problem?
  • Where did you find the information: line plot or data table?
  • What strategy did you use?

When most students are done with Questions 2–4, use the vignette before Question 5 to change the data slightly. Tell students that Mrs. Cook collects more data. She now has data from 30 people rather than 20 people. Tell students to work with a partner to answer Questions 5–8 assuming Mrs. Cook added more data.

  • How many were in the data originally?
  • What changed?
  • What does the problem ask you to find out?
  • What strategy did you use?
  • What labels describe the numbers? (people; centimeters)
