Lesson 4

Measuring Mass

Est. Class Sessions: 3

Developing the Lesson

Part 3: Analyzing the Data

Have student pairs complete Question 5 in the Explore Section of the Measuring Mass pages in the Student Activity Book. Students use their graphs or data tables to obtain the information needed to solve these multistep problems. Question 7 specifically focuses on the additive property of mass. Students may find a difference of a gram or so because both objects could have been a bit over or under the whole number mass and would not show on the balance until the error is compounded.

Upon completion have students share their strategies for some of the Explore questions in a class discussion. Figure 6 shows four solutions for finding the mass of four objects in Question 5B.
