TIMS Challenge

This DPP item can be used to practice multiplication facts for the 9s.

Jonah will have 63 cans by the end of the week. The 63 cans will earn his class $3.15. Therefore, they will have the money they need to reach the class goal.

To find the number of cans, students might skip count by nines.

cans: 9 18 27 36 45 54 63
days: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7

To find out how much money he earned, students might use a calculator or repeated addition.

63 + 63 + 63 + 63 + 63 = 315

X. Jonah's Class Project

Jonah's class is recycling aluminum cans to raise money for a field trip. The class needs $3 more to reach their goal.

  1. If he finds 9 cans a day for an entire week, how many cans will he have for his class?
  2. If Jonah receives 5 cents for each can he collects during the week, will the class reach its goal? Show or tell how you know.
