Assign the Give Me a Clue pages in the Student
Activity Book. When students have completed all
five questions, you may choose to discuss
Questions 3–5. Questions 3 and 5 have more than
one solution. Ask pairs of students to trade papers
and look at each other's solutions.
To encourage
partners to give constructive feedback, suggest they
ask questions such as the following:
- Does your partner's solution match the clues in
the building plan?
- How is your building plan different from your
partner's building plan?
- How is your building plan similar to your partner's
building plan?
- Looking at the number sentence in Question 5,
how did your partner find the volume of the
building?
Ask a few students to share their partner's solutions
with the class.
Use the Give Me a Clue pages with the Feedback Box in the
Student Activity Book to assess students' abilities to solve
problems involving volume [E2]; make connections [E4];
recognize that different shapes can have the same volume
[E6]; count and add cubic units to find volume [E8]; and
construct a building plan given the volume (number of
cubes), floor plan, and height [E9]. To provide targeted
practice, ask students to create their own building clues and
then have a partner find the missing information.
