Lesson 5

Subtracting Multidigit Numbers

Est. Class Sessions: 3

Summarizing the Lesson

After students have had time to solve the Swim Camp for Sharks problems, display the Subtraction Strategies Menu for Larger Numbers from the Student Activity Book Reference section.

  • Show how you used expanded form to solve one of these problems.
  • Show how you used the compact method to solve one of these problems.
  • Show how you used mental math to solve one of these problems.
  • Are there any strategies on the Subtraction Strategies Menu for Larger Numbers that you have questions about?

Tell students to take out the My Own Subtraction Strategies Menu page in the Student Activity Book. Explain that they will fill in this blank menu with a variety of solutions to a subtraction problem with larger numbers, 928 − 697. This problem has one trade. Students will work with a partner to complete the page. Instruct them to refer to the Subtraction Strategies Menu for Larger Numbers in the Student Activity Book Reference section as they work. Encourage students to refer to this completed menu as they solve problems in future lessons.

Use the My Own Subtraction Strategies Menu page in the Student Activity Book to assess students' progress toward subtracting multidigit numbers using mental math strategies (e.g., composing and decomposing numbers, counting) with base-ten pieces and number lines [E6]; subtracting multidigit numbers using paper-and-pencil methods (e.g., expanded form, compact) [E7]; check calculations [MPE4]; and show work [MPE5].
