Workshop: Multidigit Addition and Subtraction
Est. Class Sessions: 2–3Before the Lesson
In this Workshop, students will have the opportunity to revisit games used earlier to continue developing strategies for solving multidigit addition and subtraction problems. Review student work and progress from previous lessons to guide instructional decisions about the following Expectations:
- E1.
- Use and apply place value concepts to make connections among representations of multidigit numbers using base-ten pieces, number lines, expanded form, and standard form.
- E5.
- Represent addition and subtraction problems using base-ten pieces and number lines.
- E6.
- Add and subtract multidigit numbers using mental math strategies (e.g., composing and decomposing numbers, counting) with base-ten pieces and number lines.
- E7.
- Add and subtract multidigit numbers using paper-and-pencil methods (e.g., expanded form, all-partials, compact).
In Part 1 of the Workshop, students will focus on addition strategies. In Part 2, they will practice subtraction strategies. Both the Multidigit Addition Practice Menu and the Multidigit Subtraction Practice Menu will guide students to appropriate practice. Students who need more practice can choose 3-digit addition and subtraction problems with 0–1 regroupings and more scaffolding. Students who are more confident can challenge themselves with 3-digit addition and subtraction with up to two regroupings and larger numbers.
This Workshop provides problems that require students to try different strategies. Students should have a collection of methods that they find useful for solving problems. Students who are confident in using a variety of strategies will be able to begin to choose the strategy most efficient for any given problem. Students will apply these strategies as they play multidigit addition and subtraction games.
