  • Slobodkina, Esphyr. Caps for Sale: A Tale of a Peddler, Some Monkeys and Their Monkey Business. HarperTrophy, New York, 1997.

Conduct a discussion centered around the book.

  • Write number sentences to describe the number of hats in these piles:
    1. On the ground on the front cover. (3 × 4 = 12)
    2. On the man's head on the first page. (4 × 4 + 1 = 17)
    3. On the ground in the next-to-last picture in the book. (2 × 4 + 3 = 11)
  • Caps cost 50 cents each. How much do the caps in each of the piles from Question 1 cost? (a. $6.00, b. $8.50, c. $5.50)
  • How many monkeys are there on the page that begins, “On every branch sat a monkey”? Try to answer without counting the monkeys. (There are 16 hats, not counting the checked hat the man is wearing. Since there are as many monkeys as hats, there are 16 monkeys.)
