Mathematical Standards

3.OA.A
Represent and solve problems involving multiplication and division. (3.OA.A.1, 3.OA.A.3, 3.OA.A.4)
3.OA.B
Understand properties of multiplication and the relationship between multiplication and division. (3.OA.A.5)

Standards for Mathematical Practice

MP1.
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
MP2.
Reason quantitatively.
MP4.
Model with mathematics.
MP6.
Attend to precision.
MP8.
Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Students consider the problem of dividing the class into teams of equal sizes. For each team size, they find the number of teams they can form and the number of students left over. To help solve this problem, students group counters into sets of equal sizes (with remainders). Students then look for patterns in the grouping to identify factors of a number.

Content in this Lesson

  • Dividing a set of objects into equal-size groups (with remainders) [E2].
  • Completing and writing number sentences for multiplication situations [E1, E2].
  • Representing multiplication and division situations using manipulatives and drawings [E2].
  • Showing solution strategies using number sentences and drawings [E5, MPE5].
  • Multiplying and dividing using mental math strategies [E3].

Represent solution strategies for problems involving multiplication facts for the 5s and 10s using number sentences and drawings.

Groupings and Number Sentences
Teacher Guide - digital

E1.
Complete open number sentences involving multiplication (e.g., × 4 = 4 + 4 + 4 and × 4 = 4 × 3; × 4 + 1 = 13).
E2.
Represent multiplication and division problems in stories, drawings, and number sentences.
E3.
Multiply and divide using mental math strategies (e.g., reasoning, repeated addition).
