TIMS Bit
Students might write:
7 × 5 + 2 = 37,
5 × 7 + 2 = 37,
or
5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 2 = 37
Possible strategy: I used the number line. I started at zero and skip counted by fives: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35. I hopped 7 times and have two left over because I needed to make two more small hops to get to 37.
Ongoing Assessment
Use DPP Item M to assess students' abilities to represent multiplication and division problems in drawings and number sentences [E2] and to represent solution strategies [E8].
The Lesson 6 Workshop provides targeted practice.
M. Making Groups
You have thirty-seven beans. Make groups of five. Write a number sentence that shows your work. Do not forget about leftover beans. Show or tell how you solve the problem.
