TIMS Task

Use this task to review the subtraction facts in Group 3.

  1. 10 − 4 = 6. Possible response: I have 10 stickers. I gave some to my sister. Now I have 4 stickers.

    How many stickers did I give to my sister?

  2. 11 − 4 = 7. Possible response: I know 10 − 4 is 6. 11 is one more than 10, so 11 − 4 would be 6 + 1, or 7.
  3. Stories and number sentences will vary.

Take note of the various strategies your students are using. After students complete the first problem, select a few students who each used a different strategy. Choose one of those strategies to have the class use to solve problem 2.
