Lesson 2

Using Maps

Est. Class Sessions: 2

Summarizing the Lesson

Tell students that you have received directions to a mystery location on Captain Jack's Island. Ask them to use the map and follow the directions, as they are read, to find the mystery spot.

  • Begin at the origin.
  • Travel 60 meters to the right.
  • Turn to the front and travel 70 meters.
  • Turn and travel 50 meters to the right.
  • This location is a place to rest before continuing your journey. Where are you? (We are at the Lookout.)
  • Leave this location and travel 40 meters back and then 30 meters to the right. Where are you? (We are at the Dock.)
  • From this location you will travel by water. You will need to go 10 meters to the right to get into your boat from the dock.
  • Row your boat 120 meters to the front and then turn left.
  • You will need to row your boat until you reach land. How far will you row? (You will row a little over 50 meters.)
  • Get out of the boat and walk about 10 meters. Where is the mystery spot? (It is the palm tree.)

If time permits, directions to other mystery locations can be given.

Assign the Maps Assessment Master to students to complete independently.

Use the Maps Assessment Master to assess students' abilities to solve multiplication problems involving measurement [E3]; plot points and find locations or objects on a map using coordinates [E4]; and measure length in centimeters [E5].
