Lesson 4

Measuring Mass

Est. Class Sessions: 2–3

Homework and Practice

  • Assign the Homework section in the Student Guide after Part 2 of the lesson.
  • Assign the Mass at the Grocery Store pages in the Student Activity Book, which asks students to examine labels on food containers at home or in the store to find the mass of the contents in grams.
  • Remind students to bring a small object from home for Part 3. The object should be small enough to fit into their hands.
  • Assign DPP items I–L. In Bit I students use doubles to solve subtraction problems. Task J involves finding coin combinations.
  • Assign Challenge L as the Problem of the Week. Students devise a strategy for solving 25,000 ÷ 100.

Math Facts: In Bit K students solve word problems that involve the last six multiplication facts.

Remind students to take home Triangle Flash Cards: Last Six Facts and the list of facts they need to study so they can prepare for the assessment of the last six facts in DPP Bit S and Task V.

To reduce the amount of reading required for Questions 5A–F in the Homework section of the Student Guide, translate the information given in questions into the following table:

Students can use the table to determine whether the conversions between kilograms and pounds described in the problems “could be” or are “crazy.” They may be able to see a clearer illustration of the pattern that doubles the number of kilograms to find the approximate number of pounds.
