TIMS Task

  1. =; 43 × 3 is the same as 43 + 43 + 43. If you take 1 away from 44 and give it to 42, then you will have 43 + 43 + 43.
  2. <; The left side is the same as 4 × 231, so it is less than 5 × 231.
  3. =; If you take 5 away from the 215 on the left side and give 2 to 623 and 3 to 465, you will have the same expressions on both sides. 623 + 2 = 625, 465 + 3 = 468, and 215 − 5 = 210; 625 + 468 + 210 = 468 + 210 + 625.
  4. >; Since 3080 is larger than 3008, the left side will produce a larger product.

D. Making Comparisons

Compare the expressions on each side of the line. Without calculating, decide if < (less than), =, or > (greater than) goes on the line to complete each number sentence. Then show or tell how you decided.

  1. 43 + 42 + 44 43 × 3
  2. 231 + 231 + 231 + 231 5 × 231
  3. 623 + 465 + 215 468 + 210 + 625
  4. 3080 × 70 3008 × 70
