Lesson 4

Patterns in Addition and Subtraction

Est. Class Sessions: 2–3

Daily Practice and Problems

Teacher Notes
X

Students can verify their answers using cubes, number lines, or ten frames. This item practices the addition and related subtraction facts in Group C.

    1. 7 + 3 = 10
    2. 7 + 2 = 9
    3. 7 + 4 = 11

7 + 3 = 10. 2 is one less than 3, so 7 + 2 = 9. 4 is one more than 3, so
7 + 4 = 11.

    1. 9 − 7 = 2
    2. 10 − 7 = 3
    3. 11 − 7 = 4

9 − 7 = 2. 10 is one more than 9, so 10 − 7 is one more than 2, or 3. 11 is two more than 9, so 11 − 7 is two more than 2, or 4.

  1. Possible response: Think about fact families. If 7 + 4 = 11, then
    11 − 7 = 4.

K. Facts and Patterns 2

How can you use the top fact to solve the two related facts under it?

  1. A. 7 + 3 = _____

    B. 7 + 2 = _____

    C. 7 + 4 = _____

  2. A. 9 − 7 = _____

    B. 10 − 7 = _____

    C. 11 − 7 = _____

  1. How does knowing 7 + 4 help you solve 11 − 7?
