Mathematical Standards

1.OA.A
Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction. (1.OA.A.1)
1.MD.C
Represent and interpret data. (1.MD.C.4)
1.NBT.C
Use place value understanding and properties of operations to add and subtract. (1.NBT.C.4)

Standards for Mathematical Practice

MP2.
Reason quantitatively.
MP3.
Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
MP7.
Look for and make use of structure.
MP8.
Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Students describe strategies used to solve addition and subtraction problems with larger numbers. Students skip count and use the 100 Chart and Rule Machine to look for patterns in addition and subtraction problems.

Content in this Lesson

  • Using skip counting to add and subtract multiples of ten [E3].
  • Using mental math strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems with larger numbers (e.g., 2 digit + 1 digit) [E4].
  • Representing addition problems using number sentences [E1].
  • Identifying and describing patterns in addition and subtraction problems [E6].
  • Using labels to show what numbers mean [MPE6].

Materials Preparation

Prepare Displays of the Rule Machine. On a display of the Rule Machine Master write "Add 3" for the rule and the following numbers in the Input column: 8, 10, 22, 27, 30, 32. On another display of the Rule Machine, write "Add 4" for the rule and the following numbers in the Input column: 0, 9, 10, 19, 20, 29, 30.

Prepare Optional Targeted Practice. Make multiple copies of the Rule Machine Master. On each copy write an addition or subtraction rule and input numbers on the Rule Machines. Copy these pages and place them in a learning center.
